UC CITCS Students Attend Fulbright Scholarship Orientation

by: Zen Lee D. Foryasen

First and second-year students from the College of Information Technology and Computer Science (CITCS) at the University of the Cordilleras participated in an online orientation on November 14, 2023 for the Fulbright Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD).

Fulbright Philippines is offering the Global UGRAD, which allows Filipino students to undertake a semester of non-degree academic study in the U.S., starting either in August 2024 or January 2025. The program aims to foster academic growth and cultural exchange among young Filipino leaders.

The orientation outlined the qualifications required for applicants. Eligible students are those currently in their first or second year, over 18 years of age, Filipino citizens residing in the country, and who have completed at least one trimester of study before December 15, 2023. Leadership ability is also a key criterion for selection.

Participants learned about the application process, scholarship benefits, and the academic and cultural experiences awaiting them in the U.S. “The session was enlightening. It opened doors to possibilities I hadn’t considered before,” said Didian Apaling, a first-year CITCS student.

The online format allowed for interactive discussions, with students posing questions about fields of study, campus life in the U.S., and how the program could impact their future careers. “The Fulbright Scholarship is more than just an academic opportunity; it’s a chance to broaden horizons and develop global perspectives,” noted Trina Sobrepeña, a second-year student. “I’m excited about the possibility of representing our university abroad.”

CITCS faculty members encouraged students to seize this opportunity. “We support our students in pursuing international experiences that enhance their academic journey and personal growth,” said Ibrahim Hanbal, a CITCS faculty.

The Fulbright Undergraduate Exchange Program emphasizes not only academic excellence but also leadership and community involvement. Successful applicants will have the chance to immerse themselves in U.S. culture and education, bringing back knowledge and experiences that can benefit their communities in the Philippines.

Students interested in applying are advised to prepare their documents promptly, as the application deadline is December 15, 2023. The CITCS department is offering assistance to applicants to ensure their submissions meet all requirements.

The University of the Cordilleras continues to support initiatives that provide its students with global opportunities. The active participation of CITCS students in the Fulbright orientation reflects the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and leadership among its students.
